Dacayana Eskrima / Arnis is a traditional Filipino Martial Art that utilises weapons-based and empty-hand techniques.
The terms Eskrima (Escrima), Arnis and Kali are used to describe the martial arts of the Philippines and a number of different systems and styles are practised around the world.
Unlike many other martial arts, the Filipino Martial Arts teach the use of weapons prior to empty-hand techniques as this not only helps students gain an understanding of the practical application of defending against weapons, but also greatly enhances the empty-hand skills of the student.
In addition to Dacayana Eskrima / Arnis, and the associated Alicaway Combat Knife System, we also teach various techniques and drills drawn from other Filipino Martial Arts as part of our Kali syllabus.
All of the Martial Arts we teach focus upon flow, precision, timing, body mechanics and control, and can be practiced by anyone regardless of age, fitness level or physical disability.
The overriding aim of the material we teach is to protect and preserve life.
The Dacayana family system of Eskrima was founded by Grandmaster Alberto 'Jun' Dacayana and the international headquarters is located in Cebu City in the Philippines.
GM Jun’s original teacher was his Grandfather, Grandmaster Dalmacio “Enciong” Alicaway, who served in the Philippine Police Bantok regiment and the Anderson Fil-American Guerrillas during World War II. The Alicaway Combat Knife System is founded on the combat experience and teachings of GM Alicaway.
Following his Grandfather's death in 1984, GM Jun trained in other styles of martial arts and, in 1990, continued his studies with his Father, Grandmaster Alberto Dacayana Sr. of Mig-Sune-Do Escrima De San Miguel.
GM Jun has also studied extensively with GM Predencio 'Ondo' Caburnay of Lapunti Arnis de Abinico.
Dacayana Eskrima continues to grow both in the Philippines and internationally and GM Jun visits the UK regularly in order that students can gain direct experience of his teaching.
In the UK, GM Jun is represented by Marcie Harding, European Director, Dacayana Eskrima and Chief Instructor, and Founder, of Holywell Martial Arts.
